This is a stunning, rare pair of low slung VINTAGE MID CENTURY OAK and BENT PLYWOOD ARMCHAIRS dating from the 1930s or 40s. They have the unusual combination of 1930s styling in the solid oak sections (backrest, arms, legs), together with a bent plywood seat which curves all the way through the backrest and forms the beautiful curved foot at the rear. These were made at a time when bent plywood was first being experimented with in furniture with the likes of Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer and Charles Eames at the forefront. While these designers pushed the material to the maximum in futuristic, now iconic designs, the maker of these chairs obviously saw some relevance of joining the old and the new. And it works; they have an aesthetic that touches on the Arts and Crafts movement, Bauhaus blocky legs and industrial bent plywood application, resulting in a well formed, stylish statement.

They epitomise the cross over from traditional to industrial designer furniture. They are masterfully constructed, using solid oak dowels and no pins or screws. Although they are low and not the most comfortable chair for an adult (but are big enough), they do have real presence and decorative quality in the right interior, especially as a pair!! Also suitable for childrens seating. No makers mark or signature. Potentially a students final year piece from one of the big art schools? However, It would be unusual to have a pair in either of these cases.

Structurally both excellent solid condition. One is slightly better than the other with original varnish in tact, meaning the finish and colour is more original. The colour varies a little between the two.

A chips in the plywood around the base as would be expected for chairs of this age. SIZE : As mentioned these are very low chairs but wide enough for an adult. I dont believe them to be kids chairs. Overall outside dimension 50x50x50cm - could this mean they are continental due to being exactly 50cm3 rather than being an obvious size in inches? Seat height at the front 35cm. Seat height at the backrest 24cm.
